Welcome to 2010 (twenty-ten)
Growing up I had always understood that 20/20 vision was the benchmark for good eyesight, and to a certain extent that’s true. In terms of human performance, 20/20 vision is the nominal performance measure, however it’s not the best.
20/10 vision is better.
If you had 20/10 vision you would be able to see exactly the same thing as someone with 20/20 vision but from twice the distance. What they could see from ten metres, you could see with the same clarity and detail at twenty metres. What they see from one kilometre, you could see from two and so on and so forth.
As we begin a new year and a new decade, I’ve made a few decisions and commitments.
Firstly, I’m going to pronounce this year as ‘twenty-ten’ rather than ‘two thousand and ten’.
Partly because I’m a bit left of centre.
Partly because it sounds a bit ‘edgier’.
But primarily because twenty-ten speaks of vision, clarity and detail beyond the ordinary and exceeding the nominal measure.
I’m anticipating that 2010 will be a year of goodwill, hope and opportunity. A year in which vision becomes reality and we work together to do good, better.
My personal challenge for 2010 is to endeavour to invest as much of my time and resource and finance in the things that truly matter.
What does that mean for me?
More time invested in my family, friends and colleagues.
More resource invested in the poor and under-valued.
More finance invested in life-changing work.
Our time on this earth is too temporary and uncertain to do otherwise.
May you have an exceptional ‘twenty-ten’.
