Stylin’ Up Regional is a vibrant community-driven cultural and creative arts program engaging Indigenous young people, Elders and community members.

For the past 4 years, the program has been working in collaboration with the communities of Cherbourg, Woorabinda, Hope Vale and Logan to develop workshop programs and initiatives reflecting community needs. Linked into the Stylin’ UP Festival, an annual event coordinated by the Inala Elders and Brisbane City Council, the program is guided by the message – Pride in self, Pride in community, Pride in culture.

Stylin’ UP Regional provides a forum for young people to tell stories, share ‘yarns’ with elders, and plays a role in building strong communities.

A team of Logan’s own young artists will showcase their talent in MCing, dance, song, and visual art on Saturday 24th October, in what will be the fourth Logan Showcase event.

Since performing at the Stylin’ UP festival in Inala in May this year, a team of young artists from Logan have been preparing for this community event and have spent the past 11 weeks participating in creative arts workshops.

Stylin’ UP Regional community member and youth worker Kyel Dancey says, “this program is important for Logan young people to express their feelings through talents such as Mcing, Lyric writing, dance and contemporary art. And this showcase will give them the opportunity to showcase this to their family, friends and community”.

Stylin’ UP Regional seeks to develop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people’s skills in music and dance and their connections to hip hop culture through supporting and developing their own voice. Some of the lyrics in this years’ song reflect the messages coming from Logan’s young people. “Everything you do in Life, STAY STRONG, Never give up the fight, STAY STRONG”.

Logan Elder Uncle Martin Watego, recongnises the Logan showcase as a day of celebration, and an important day for the entire community. “The day gives us an opportunity to support and acknowledge the achievements of our young people,” he said.

It will be a great day out for the family with entertainment from the Logan Stylin’ Up Regional crew and special performances by Joel Turner aka J Bigz who is Australia’s own world beat boxing champion, Dyce, K1 Kitch, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional dancing and more. You can also expect craft stalls, creative workshops such as face painting and badge making, traditional games, dance competitions and a traditional Kup Murri lunch.

The Logan component of Stylin’ Up Regional is funded through Logan City Council and Coordinated by Human Ventures and the Logan Community Crew/
