Creative Tracks @ the Billy Boil Leadership Camp

The Creative Tracks team joined the Hopevale Arts & Cultural Centre on their first leadership camp with 18 young people from the community at Billy Boil Camp, just outside of Hopevale.

The camp provided the team with a great opportunity to better connect with some of the older young people (15 to 25 years) from the community and to facilitate creative arts workshops and leadership / motivation discussions with the group. Kitch (beatbox, raps and songwriting), Alicia (songwriting) and Steph (film and photography) worked with young people at the camp over 3 days to encourage them to share stories, learn new skills and creatively express themselves through song writing, film/photographs and fun activities.

The camp was a fantastic opportunity to sit with young people facing important decisions in their life as they transition out of high school and into the workforce and community life. Working with the young men at the camp, Kitch and Steph created a song and filmed conversations about local cultural practices, experiences of growing up in Hopevale and their visions for the type of future they wanted to create.

Watching our CBGTV film (a mock television show created with young people in Cherbourg) inspired several of the young women present to develop a reality TV concept which was filmed on the final day of the camp. This film represented a significant shift from their initial avoidance of photographs being taken of them on the first 2 days to being in front of the camera for almost an entire day to create what will be (when edited) a creative and humorous short film which we can continue building on during future trips.
