People are not pollution

An interesting and rational article that balances the immigration debate, and challenges the argument for population limits as a means of slowing climate change.

People are not pollution.

Haiti – how can we help?

Earthquake disaster in Haiti (AFP: Lisandro Suero)

The recent earthquake in Haiti has captured the world’s attention.

One of the poorest countries in the world – 70% of Haiti’s population live on less that $2 a day and 50% are unemployed.

The consequence of a major natural disaster in a country such as Haiti is vast and catastrophic.

The consequence of a single story

I recently viewed Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s compelling presentation on TED titled The danger of a single story.

Chimamanda argues that the problem with the single story, or stereotypes, is that they are incomplete and they become the only story. The consequence, Chimamanda states, “is that it robs people of dignity.”

“It makes our recognition of an equal humanity difficult,” she continues.

“Stories have been used to dispossess and malign. But stories can also be used to empower and to humanise.”

Africa is a continent comprised of 53 countries, 5 time zones, approximately 2000 languages and more than 1 billion people.

Welcome to 2010 (twenty-ten)

500px-Snellen_chartGrowing up I had always understood that 20/20 vision was the benchmark for good eyesight, and to a certain extent that’s true. In terms of human performance, 20/20 vision is the nominal performance measure, however it’s not the best.

20/10 vision is better.

If you had 20/10 vision you would be able to see exactly the same thing as someone with 20/20 vision but from twice the distance. What they could see from ten metres, you could see with the same clarity and detail at twenty metres. What they see from one kilometre, you could see from two and so on and so forth.

In October 2009, the Queensland State Government banned skateboarding on roads after dark.

The stated purpose of the ban was to increase levels of “safety”, “common courtesy” and “common sense”.

In the context of climate change and childhood obesity is an ‘active sport’ curfew a smart decision?

The Generation M Manifesto

GenMRecently, on 8th July 2009, the Generation M Manifesto was published by Umair Haque. It has spread widely in a short space of time and judging by the comments on his post, it has certainly polarised people.

The people who are most critical of it seem to have missed the point of the manifesto and been caught up in the literal meaning of the term ‘generation’. The manifesto is not about old versus young, it is about a mindset and a desire for systemic change. Read more

Adjectives in the 21st Century

adjectives_tnI love adjectives, I really do.

They give life and colour and context to those plain old nouns. For example “a remarkable idea” takes on a whole different colour to “an idea”.

But I find that I’m rebelling against the use of adjectives that describe how things should be done…
